Paris Haute Couture, Ulyana Sergeenko SS 2019

The spring/summer 2019 Haute Couture collection designed by couturier Ulyana Sergeenko is inspired by Mikhail Sholokhov's epic novel "And Quiet Flows the Don" and, of course, the film adaptation of the same name, directed by Sergei Gerasimov, 1957. The chosen theme has influenced the stylistic style of the collection - being based on the personality of the main characters of the novel, primarily Aksinya, the soul so passionate and lively and Natalia, calm and gentle heroine. Ulyana Sergeenko thus traces, like a theatrical costume designer, her personal idea of how Aksinya and Natalia would be dressed for a theatrical adaptation, except that instead of a stage there is a couture catwalk.

And the result is as alienating as it is frankly innovative and interesting. Because in the end, fashion is the art of representation of the self, so why not let the clothes give us the portrait of these characters? What do they tell us, depending on what they wear, whether it is Aksinya or Natalia? Really a fashion show intended as a show for this intellectual game that uses garments of great tailoring.
